Today we have another manual-transmission wagon. What can we say? We're automotive journalists. At least this 2005 Volvo V50 2.5T AWD isn't brown.

This Wisconsin-based Swede is a red-on-black car with 165,300 miles on the clock and factory options such as Bi-Xenon headlights with headlight washers, heated seats, and premium audio. It also has 17-inch wheels and apparently is in good mechanical and cosmetic shape.

The seller says the car is rust-free and lists the maintenance in the post. Aftermarket features include extra snow tires, Bluetooth audio, a trailer-tow hitch, and a Yakima roof rack.

There are two Volvo wagons parked in front of the house two doors from mine and they are immaculate. I really like Volvo wagons. And I really want to like this one being a manual, and a real color, but this one just looks used up. The leather, the plastics, pretty much the entire interior shows Lindsay Lohan-levels of 18+ years of some major hard living here. They can last a long time - the XC70 Cross Country we once had and sold to a neighbor's son to take to school - still looks good and still going strong. So I don't have any doubts that this one will continue to run, but it's going to take some serious money to redo the seats and clean up the interior.

The owner writes that he got the car last year and here's the maintenance done:

Summer 2023 - Oil filter housing/PCV, timing belt, water pump , serpentine belt, full reman turbo & exhaust manifold with new studs and gasket
Fall 2022 - New tailgate shocks, new floor matts
Summer 2022 - New front struts/shocks/top mount, new rear shocks and mount
Summer 2022 - New rear brake calipers, new rotors and pads all around, new brake fluid
Summer 2022 - Timing belt/water pump, upper and lower radiator coolant hoses
Summer 2022 - Replace both engine mounts
Summer 2022 - New tires on stock wheels, Kumho Ecsta
Spring 2021 - Headliner replaced, rear sunroof drains unplugged
Fall 2020 - Front sunroof drains unplugged, replaced 'trunk' drain at cowl, drivers side
Summer 2020 - Rear wheel bearings replaced
Summer 2020 - Battery replaced
Fall 2019 - Replaced 6x ignition coils, spark plugs. Installed H11 fog bulbs.

Timing belt, water pump, shocks and struts, brakes...and is that two timing belt changes in a year? Guy's sunk some serious money into a car he's selling a year after getting it. There is either some major lifestyle changes going on or the theme from Jaws is playing each time this car is turned on.

  The seller seems to be mechanically inclined so I read that as, I the seller did the timing belt/water pump/coolant hoses in Summer 2022 and something wasn't done correctly so I had it done again by a professional in June/July. Reman turbo isn't filling my heart with joy either, someone hooned this example at some point. Not sure what he paid but he's probably -$2-4,000 into this as it sits.

  Aside from the headliner everything until Summer 2023 doesn't seem too bad. That's about what I'd expect on a 15+ year old vehicle.

Spend not much more and get a V60, and if you’re smart you’d save up for the 3.0 T6 model which is splendid with a Polestar Optimization.

Varezhka I have still yet to see a Malibu on the road that didn't have a rental sticker. So yeah, GM probably lost money on every one they sold but kept it to boost their CAFE numbers.I'm personally happy that I no longer have to dread being "upgraded" to a Maxima or a Malibu anymore. And thankfully Altima is also on its way out.
Tassos Under incompetent, affirmative action hire Mary Barra, GM has been shooting itself in the foot on a daily basis.Whether the Malibu cancellation has been one of these shootings is NOT obvious at all.GM should be run as a PROFITABLE BUSINESS and NOT as an outfit that satisfies everybody and his mother in law's pet preferences.IF the Malibu was UNPROFITABLE, it SHOULD be canceled.More generally, if its SEGMENT is Unprofitable, and HALF the makers cancel their midsize sedans, not only will it lead to the SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST ones, but the survivors will obviously be more profitable if the LOSERS were kept being produced and the SMALL PIE of midsize sedans would yield slim pickings for every participant.SO NO, I APPROVE of the demise of the unprofitable Malibu, and hope Nissan does the same to the Altima, Hyundai with the SOnata, Mazda with the Mazda 6, and as many others as it takes to make the REMAINING players, like the Excellent, sporty Accord and the Bulletproof Reliable, cheap to maintain CAMRY, more profitable and affordable.
GregLocock Car companies can only really sell cars that people who are new car buyers will pay a profitable price for. As it turns out fewer and fewer new car buyers want sedans. Large sedans can be nice to drive, certainly, but the number of new car buyers (the only ones that matter in this discussion) are prepared to sacrifice steering and handling for more obvious things like passenger and cargo space, or even some attempt at off roading. We know US new car buyers don't really care about handling because they fell for FWD in large cars.
Slavuta Why is everybody sweating? Like sedans? - go buy one. Better - 2. Let CRV/RAV rust on the dealer lot. I have 3 sedans on the driveway. My neighbor - 2. Neighbors on each of our other side - 8 SUVs.
Theflyersfan With sedans, especially, I wonder how many of those sales are to rental fleets. With the exception of the Civic and Accord, there are still rows of sedans mixed in with the RAV4s at every airport rental lot. I doubt the breakdown in sales is publicly published, so who knows... GM isn't out of the sedan business - Cadillac exists and I can't believe I'm typing this but they are actually decent - and I think they are making a huge mistake, especially if there's an extended oil price hike (cough...Iran...cough) and people want smaller and hybrids. But if one is only tied to the quarterly shareholder reports and not trends and the big picture, bad decisions like this get made.
